Based on a popular RPG of the same name. The story takes place in a fantasy medieval China that’s full of kung fu action, CG special effects, and whacky humor.

Li Xiao Yao, a “Stinky Punk”, journeys to Dream Island to find a cure for his sick aunt. There he meets and marries the love of his life Ling’Er. On his way back home with the cure, he discovers that he’s been tricked by the Lunar Sect Cult so that they can kidnap Ling’Er.

He awakens in his bed, having forgotten his entire trip to Dream Island but having saved his aunt. He rescues Ling’Er from the Lunar Sect Cult and is in turn rescued by a mysterious stranger who teaches him kung fu. Xiao Yao and Ling’Er travel to the capital to meet her father.

Along the way, they meet various people, get harassed by the Lunar Sect Cult, discover both of their histories, save the world and fall in love with each other all over again. It starts off sweet and light hearted but ends with plenty of tears.

Sin:

I sped/skipped quite a few parts in this drama. The show had both great parts, but it had equally terrible areas where I would’ve fallen asleep if I wasn’t able to skip past.

The drama starts off in quite an interesting way and all the characters that appeared seemed happy. I was actually quite surprised when the main character, Ling Er, tried to always smile (due to a promise) and everyone laughed and joked and just had a great time with one other. This only lasted about three episodes.

As the story continues, many different events occur, some of which seem very dragged out, but some that are clearly comedic and have you slapping your knees in laughter. Ling Er seems to have changed her personality and I think she totally forgot her promise about always smiling, no matter how hard the situations and conditions become. Her attitude also changes drastically from very nice to downright mean to Xiao Yao, which I also didn’t like, because I didn’t see any progression from one attitude to another. I understand the reasoning behind how Ling Er acts, but even so, the number of episodes where Ling Er seems to act incredibly mean are too many.

I like dramas based off of characters that I like. I became indifferent to or didn’t like many, if not all, of the characters I liked at the beginning by the last episode. Every character also seems to like becoming more obvious and cheesier as the series progress. Each character would repeat someone else’s line at least two times while seeming dazed and awed. I also disliked how everything in the story seemed to represent the hackneyed message: the power of love.

The drama also seems incredibly low budget due to the terrible CG effects. I started to amuse myself while watching the show by looking and pointing out how bad many of the effects were, because there really are too many. There are some parts of the show which seem to come directly out of a video game.

Putting the bad effects and my overall dislike for the plot line aside, much of the music in the show was great. There was music that sounded like something from a video game, but there were also insert songs that were pleasant to listen to. I liked the few episodes that were incredibly funny and would have anyone laughing continuously, too.

I do recommend this drama, but I also recommend that people skip through parts where they find boring. If you think you are missing out on a plot detail, most times than not, you aren’t. (I recommend skipping a lot of the last few episodes–they really dragged and the ending was quite bad.) There are a good number of fight scenes (even though many look quite fake) that viewers might enjoy. But if not for anything else, watch this drama because there is good music at times and there are a number of parts (mainly in the beginning to the middle of the drama) that are hilarious!
