A Frozen Flower

Genre: History, Drama, Action, Romance
Starring: Joo Jin-Mo,Jo In-Seong,Song Ji-Hyo
Release year: 2009
Language: Korean
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:

In the end of Goryeo era politically manipulated by the Yuan Dynasty, the ambitious King of the Goryeo Dynasty organizes Kunryongwe. Hong Lim, the commander of Kunryongwe, captivates the King of Goryeo, and the Queen keeps her eyes on the relationship between Hong Lim and the King with a reluctant view. Meanwhile, the bilateral relation between Goryeo and the Yuan gets worse as Yuan demands to install the cousin of the King in the Crown Prince of Goryeo with ascribing it to no son the King has. The King refuses it resolutely, so the high-ranking officials of Goryeo, who are in submission to Yuan, are discontented with the king. One day, the King gives Hong Lim a covert yet unobjectionable order to sleep with the Queen instead of himself to protect the independence of Goryeo from the Yuan by making a son, the successor to Goryeo throne.

EVIEW:
" Homosexuality is no longer a hush-hush topic for Korean filmmakers. But depictions of sexuality take another turn in "Ssanghwajeom" ("A Frozen Flower"), as a relationship between two men becomes a triangle of jealousy with an addition of a woman.
But the movie, to be released on Dec. 30, is not limited to sexual entanglement. Sex is used as a key tool to prod the plot forward, often at a rapid pace. To that end, director Yoo Ha includes plenty of explicit scenes of sex and graphic violence. The result, however, is somewhat mixed. The film's poetic justice produces an unlikely anti-hero.
Although the movie sets itself out as a historical drama set in the late Goryeo Dynasty, viewers should bear in mind that the story is purely fictional. The nation is now under the virtual rule of China's Yuan Dynasty, and Goryeo's king (Joo Jin-mo) has to produce a son to keep his position. The only problem is that he cannot sleep with a woman, much less have a romantic relationship with one.
The king's real romantic partner is none other than his chief bodyguard Hong Lim (Jo In-Seong). The two have sex in the inner sanctums of the Goryeo court, and we are shown a graphic kiss scene between the king and Hong Lim, which is bound to shock some Korean viewers.
But the real shocker comes when the king decides to ask Hong Lim to sleep with his wife - the queen (Song Ji-hyo). This idea is based on his assumption that all his political problems will go away once there is a royal son.
The king's miscalculation, of course, is that passionate romantic feelings sometimes form after sex. Hong Lim, who has never slept with a woman before, hesitates to touch the body of the queen at first, but once the physical bond is initiated, he finds himself totally enslaved.
Love triangle established, the plot sprints ahead with a portrayal of the uncontrollable anger and jealousy of the king, leaving heads rolling in the process.
Director Yoo seems to suggest that Hong Lim has long been subjected to a sort of coercion, rather than a real romantic relationship with the king. Hong is a mere subordinate, while the king has all the power, including the right to order his death.
The queen, for her part, discovers the liberating exhilaration when she falls in love with Hong Lim after years of neglect and inattention. She suffers a deep sense of guilt initially but she finds herself indulging in the dangerous liaisons with Hong Lim.
What is notable is that sex in "Ssanghwajeom" ("A Frozen Flower") is deeply associated with death. Eros is often depicted in literature and film as being able to overcome everything. The feelings that interconnect Hong Lim and the queen could backfire lethally because they are cheating on the almighty king.
As far as a plot is concerned, the unfortunate queen and her lover bravely defy the obstacles to prove that mutual love is more powerful than unrequited passion. The king's relationship with Hong Lim has been futile and one-sided. Failing to confirm whether his bodyguard is truly in love with him, he comes to realize that he is totally alone.
It is a pity that the king, trapped in a man's body, is betrayed by his secret lover. What the king fails to notice is that Hong Lim is a bisexual who prefers heterosexual sex.
But Joo Jin-mo does not have to lament his role. It is Jo In-Seong who fails to create much-needed emotional subtlety and often delivers his lines in an annoyingly mechanical fashion. In contrast, Joo Jin-mo emerges as the ultimate winner in the film. Joo pulls off creating a complex and nuanced character with whom audiences will be able to sympathize, rescuing a film that might otherwise have fallen into the trap of having too much sex and violence. "

Inner Senses - Yee do Hung Gaan

Genre: Crime, Horror, Thriller
Starring: Leslie Cheung, Karena Lam, Maggie Poon, Waise Lee
Release year: 2002
Language: Chinese (cantonese)
Subtitle: English

SYNOPSIS:

This is the story of Yan, a young woman haunted by fleeting images of what she believes to be dead people. Told that it is all in her mind by her psychologist Jim, Yan still cannot find any other explanations for her visions. Soon, her suspicions are confirmed when Jim begins seeing the same things she does and the two begin to unravel a mystery that leads to a forgotten past.

" Incredibly well-produced horror-suspense thriller features fine acting and an involving, suspenseful storyline. This is ultimately an entertaining ride, though the end result is remarkably free of any lasting effect.
Though it starts out as an obvious Sixth Sense ripoff, Law Chi-Leung and Derek Yee's cerebral horror-thriller is an entertaining and worthy effort. They manage to tell an interesting story with just the right cinematic touch. For a Hong Kong film, this is easily above average work.
Newly-minted Hong Kong Film Award Winner Karena Lam stars as Yan Cheung, an emotionally damaged young woman who - that's right - sees dead people. Though she's become ultra-tense thanks to her constant frights, she elects to move into a new apartment by herself. Landlord Norman Tsui advertises the flat as having lots of natural light, but unfortunately there's something called nighttime. When dusk arrives, Yan is stuck in a spooky, closed-in space all by herself, and before too long she starts seeing apparitions of Tsui's dead wife and child.
Enter psychiatrist Jim Law (Leslie Cheung), a workaholic therapist who has elaborate theories to the origin of ghosts in a person's psyche. According to Jim, ghosts are simply the result of the imagination, created by imprinted conditioning (i.e. ghost stories or cultural superstition) and a person's tendencies to believe the fanciful.
Jim is assigned to Yan by her former doctor Wilson (Waise Lee), who also happens to be Jim's friend and Yan's brother-in-law. Jim immediately pegs Yan as a practicer of his pet theory. He believes she's a self-centered, emotionally unstable crybaby who attributes her fears and failures to the presence of ghosts. In true movie-therapist style, Jim makes Yan's case his personal crusade, and resolves to get to the bottom of her extensive emotional hang-ups. Though resistant at first, Yan eventually agrees to Jim's counsel, and even begins attaching herself emotionally to him.
Newcomer Karena Lam does a fine job opposite screen veteran Leslie Cheung, and gives a compelling and even genuine performance. As usual, Cheung overacts at key times, but it works for his part. Law Chi-Leung's direction shores up any overkill in the acting, and it also helps hide the film's inherent unoriginality. While the story is thoughtful and well-developed, it still rings of your usual horror/thriller genre devices. And Jim's attempts to cure Yan become your standard doctor-patient drama with romantic issues thrown in for good measure.
However, when hour two rolls around, things change. They really change. In fact, if you're one of those "no spoilers" moviegoers then I highly suggest skipping the next paragraph. I won't be giving away too much, but a few hints might spoil the ride.
Yan's emotional/ghost-seeing issues are the film's immediate focus, but the film eventually shifts to its true subject: Jim Law. Jim is far from the balanced, stable doctor that he initally appears to be. While he does care about his work and his patients, he's not a healthy puppy. In truth, Jim makes Yan look like the poster child for well-adjusted individuals. He has serious, serious, problems and when they eventually come to light, not just Jim's sanity is called into question. There's a possibility that his theories are dead wrong, too.
At this point, things get really unsettling damn quick. To achive this, director Law Chi-Leung pulls out a full bag of suspense-thriller tricks, meaning very little actual action. Suspense is achieved through uncluttered stillness and silent dread. Aided by fine cinematography and art direction, Law manages to put together a horror-suspense flick that bears some comparison to Japan's seminal chiller The Ring. Like that film, Law works to create a spiral of fear and madness that looks like it's going to send everyone straight to hell.
However, just looking like it's headed to hell is a far cry from actually going there. When all is said and done, the most remarkable thing about Inner Senses is how incredibly free of weight it truly is. The film is involving and even affecting, but it isn't really haunting - which would seem to register as a failure given the film's chosen genre. Inner Senses actually isn't a failure. On the contrary, it's an involving motion picture that does its job extremely well. However, it's also a film that doesn't really hold up upon repeat viewings, as it lacks any real emotional resonance. The film's a great ride, but once it's over, it's over.
